LTO Chief Assistant Secretary Markus Lacanilao said the Land Transportation Office has filed multiple charges against the driver and owner of a tricycle that went viral for counterflowing and blocking traffic.
Lacanilao said a show cause order was issued requiring both individuals to appear before the LTO Intelligence and Investigation Division in Quezon City on Jan. 22.
“Ang paggawa ng counterflow at pag-uugali na walang disiplina at respeto sa kalsada ay hindi lamang labag sa batas kundi pati na rin isang pagbabalewala sa kaligtasan ng lahat (Driving counterflow and having no discipline and respect for the road is not only illegal but also shows disregard for everyone’s safety),” Lacanilao said.
The driver and owner are facing administrative cases for reckless driving, obstruction of traffic, driving against traffic, being an improper person to operate a motor vehicle, and violations involving licensing and compulsory vehicle registration.
As part of the ongoing investigation, the driver’s license has been placed under a 90-day temporary suspension, while the tricycle has been put on alarm status.
The video that circulated online showed the tricycle traveling in the wrong lane, obstructing traffic. The driver was also seen making offensive gestures, posing mockingly, and shouting at the camera.
“Hindi tayo papayag na magkaroon ng mga driver na itinuturing na biro ang mga batas trapiko at nang-aasar pa sa ibang mga gumagamit ng kalsada. Ang LTO ay determinadong pigilan ang ganitong uri ng pag-uugali (We won’t allow drivers who make light of traffic laws and insult other road users. The LTO is determined to stop such behavior),” Lacanilao said.
