BUCKLE up, motorists and commuters! EDSA will finally undergo rehabilitation starting December 24, 2025.
In a press briefing, Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Vince Dizon said that they will take advantage of the holiday break. The reblocking and asphalt overlay of the EDSA busway lanes will be done for 24 hours, starting at 11AM of December 24 until 5AM of January 5, 2026.
Following this, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said that there will be no changes in the number coding scheme during the two-week period.
“There will be no change in the number coding scheme because the road closure will only happen from December 24 to January 5, which is in our experience, in our data, there are very few vehicles in the entire Metro Manila. Maybe because, probably, 70 percent of the population of Metro Manila is either abroad or in the provinces,” MMDA Chairman Romando Artes said.
After the holidays starting January 5, the EDSA rehabilitation works will be done in the evening, specifically from 10PM to 4AM, so as not to cause further disruption in the traffic flow along Metro Manila’s major thoroughfare. This will be the schedule until May 31, 2026.
According to Dizon, they will be using a new asphalt technology from Japan called stone mastic asphalt. Not only will this hasten the completion of the project, but also ensure sturdier and better road quality.
“If you see the asphalt in Japan, this is the technology we will use because we will not be reblocking everything, we need durable asphalt… This, it is more durable and easier to maintain,” Dizon said.
Compared to the original plan of the EDSA rehabilitation, the project will now just last for eight months, which will be divided into two phases. The first phase will last four months and will be to fix Roxas Boulevard to Orense, while the remaining four months will be allotted for the rest of EDSA.
The cost was also cut — from the original P17 billion to now just P6 billion.
